The “Hawaiian” mango from Puerto Rico

A travelling nursery name almost hides the place this little tree came from.

Tete Nene — Puerto Rico

Documented history

Tete Nene is the Puerto Rican name recorded for the mango now frequently sold as Dwarf Hawaiian. The grower record is explicit about the mismatch: despite that later name, its origin is Puerto Rico.

It is considered a likely Julie seedling, though that parentage remains tentative. Its compact growth helps explain “Dwarf,” but the route by which “Hawaiian” became attached is not established in the source. Keeping Tete Nene visible gives the fruit back its Puerto Rican name without inventing the missing part of the journey.
