A gift of a graft beside the Cauvery

A family garden in Srirangam preserves one local chapter of Imam Pasand’s journey.

Himam Pasand — Thathachariar Gardens, Srirangam, Tamil Nadu; earlier graft from Andhra Pradesh

Local tradition

In a 2014 interview, S. Rangarajan of Thathachariar Gardens said his uncle S.R.V. Thatham began the farm in 1945, and a friend brought its first Imam Pasand graft from Andhra Pradesh. The family developed and shared that material. It is a specific recollection about the mango’s arrival in this locality, rather than proof of the cultivar’s ultimate origin.

The report translates Imam Pasand as “the Imam’s favourite” and notes that its earliest naming history is uncertain. Stories linking it to Humayun remain stories. The tangible local inheritance is the garden, the grafts and a family’s care beside the Cauvery.
