The “poor-coloured” mango Goa treasures

Mankurad’s name is remembered as a Portuguese description transformed by local speech.

Mankurad — Goa

Local tradition

The usual name story begins with Malcorado, understood as “poor-coloured” in Portuguese, and follows the word into the Konkani name Mankurad. It is a wonderfully unfair description for a mango so highly prized in Goa.

Goan horticultural records preserve names including Goa Mankur, Kurad and Malcorado, while leaving the cultivar’s precise origin unknown. The grafting culture documented in Goa helped keep favourite trees in circulation. The name’s journey is better documented than the identity of its first grower.
