A name from an old story, a tree for a new orchard
Amrapali combines a celebrated ancient name with a documented modern breeding history.

Documented history
Amrapali was developed at IARI from Dashehari × Neelum. Its small tree and regular cropping gave growers a way to fit more trees into an orchard. Here the origin is recorded work by breeders, rather than a chance fruit found beside a road.
Cultural accounts connect its name to Amrapali of ancient Vaishali, remembered in Buddhist tradition. That is the name’s cultural association; it is separate from the cultivar’s modern parentage. The mango called Amrapali is not an ancient tree carried unchanged into the present.
The names it answers to
- Amrapali / Amrapalli
- Spellings used in Indian cultivar records.
- Dashehari × Neelum
- Documented parentage; the reciprocal cross produced Mallika.
