A mango named for a loyal customer
Walter Zill turned a chance seedling into a thank-you that kept growing.
Pickering — Boynton Beach, Florida, United States
Documented history
Walter Zill selected Pickering from a chance seedling in Boynton Beach during the 1980s. He named it for Wayne Pickering, a longtime customer. The name carries a nursery relationship into every garden where the tree is planted.
Its compact habit later earned it the informal description “condo mango,” bringing it into small spaces and containers. Carrie and Irwin have been suggested as its parents, but that remains speculation. The remembered customer is a firmer part of the story than the proposed family tree.
