The name promises a pot of sugar
Panchadara Kalasa belongs to Andhra’s tradition of mangoes you drink as much as eat.
Panchadara Kalasa — Krishna–Godavari region, Andhra Pradesh
Documented history
The Telugu name is commonly rendered as “sugar pot”: panchadara for sugar, kalasa for a pot. The image suits a mango treasured for its juice. Researchers trace Panchadarakalasa to the Krishna–Godavari region and place it among the rasaalu, the juicy or sucking mangoes of Andhra.
A 2013 study found small genetic differences among trees grown under this name across the then-undivided state. That is a lovely complication in its story: a familiar name can hold the history of local propagation and selection, rather than one perfectly uniform clone. Its first named tree is not established by that study.
