A grand name with a quieter paper trail

Jehangir is recorded in South Indian horticulture, but its name alone cannot prove a royal origin.

Jehangir — South Indian collections and breeding work, including Kodur, Andhra Pradesh

A name on the map

Jehangir, also written Jahangir, is a recognised mango in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University’s variety list. APEDA also records it as a parent of Swarna Jehangir, developed at the Fruit Research Station at Kodur. Its legacy therefore lives in another mango’s family tree.

The name naturally invites stories about the Mughal emperor. The sources checked here do not identify its first tree, breeder or naming occasion, so that royal connection remains unverified. The documented story is of a valued variety kept in cultivation and used to create something new.
