A Miami surname with a life in Japan

A Florida seedling found new identities in orchards far across the Pacific.

Irwin — Miami, Florida → East Asia and beyond

Documented history

Irwin was selected by F. D. Irwin in Miami during the 1940s, with Lippens and Haden in its parentage. It later travelled to growers in Taiwan, Japan and other countries, becoming much more than a Florida backyard selection.

In Japan, carefully grown Irwin fruit can be sold under regional and premium names associated with Miyazaki. Those names describe origin or a market standard; they do not mean the cultivar itself was first bred there. The surname on the family tree and the identity on the gift box tell different chapters of the same journey.
