The seedling someone noticed on a housing property
Edward Mitchell gave an overlooked tree a name and a place in the nursery trade.
Gold Nugget — Miami, Florida, United States
Documented history
Gold Nugget was selected in the 1980s by commercial grower Edward Mitchell. The seedling was growing on a housing-project property owned by a friend. Its origin had not been recorded, but its fruit caught the grower’s attention.
Mitchell named it and obtained a plant patent in 1990. Later assessments suggest Kent parentage. The exact seed remains uncertain; the act of noticing does not. This mango’s history is a reminder that valuable fruit can begin outside a formal research orchard.
