An Appemidi story cannot be reduced to one famous mother tree. At its 2023 diversity fair, ICAR–IIHR described conserving more than 200 Appemidi varieties and honoured five custodian farmers for protecting them. The name opens onto a whole collection of mango diversity.

These are mangoes prized while tender, before a dessert mango would be ready. Their place in a pickle jar gives growers and cooks a reason to remember small differences between trees. The farmers honoured at that fair are part of the origin story still being written: knowledge survives because people keep using it.
