Valencia Pride

Pleasantly sweet and dramatic in scale, but the flavor never quite lands the monologue.

How to enjoy it

Valencia Pride is an impressively large fruit. Let the shoulders soften before cutting; then share the cheeks and put the softer trimmings into a smoothie.

Open over a bowl to catch the juice. Scoop the ripe flesh; strain blended pulp if you prefer less fibre.

When it is ripe

Let the fruit soften substantially; it is usually enormous.

Flavour notes are subjective. Ripeness, handling and growing conditions change the fruit.

A Florida backyard becomes a family favourite

Documented history: consult the claims and qualifications in the cited sources.

Valencia Pride began as a Haden seedling planted in Miami in 1937. It fruited in 1941, and growers soon began propagating it. Over the following decades it became a familiar backyard tree.

The name can sound Spanish, but the documented selection story is Floridian. The sources consulted do not explain the naming occasion. What they do preserve is the patient interval between planting a seed and discovering what it would become—four years before the first fruit, then many more years of other families growing it.
