Recorded names

A shared name does not by itself establish an identical cultivar. Place, language and source matter.

Fazli

India

Traditionally associated with Fazal Bibi of Arapur.

Fazri

India

A spelling encountered in regional lists; local naming should be checked before assuming identical accessions.

Fazli Babu

Alternative form recorded in the Murshidabad study.

The woman remembered in a very large mango

Local tradition: an attributed account, with uncertainty preserved.

A study of mango growers in Murshidabad preserves the account that Fazli was named for Fazal Bibi of Arapur. It is an unusually personal thread in mango history: a woman’s name surviving through a fruit whose reputation became much larger than one orchard.

The source records the naming account, but does not supply contemporary evidence from her lifetime. We keep it as tradition. Fazli’s later identity in Malda is well established, and the name Fazli Babu also appears in the same account.
