The red-cheeked mango of West Java
Local tradition: an attributed account, with uncertainty preserved.
An Indonesian geographical-indication publication recounts the local tradition that gedong refers to wealthy households that enjoyed the mango. Gincu evokes its lipstick-red skin. These are the community’s naming explanations, rather than a scientifically established pedigree.
IPB research documents growers and production centres in Indramayu, Cirebon and Majalengka. The regional identity therefore reaches beyond a single orchard, while the broader Gedong group is not automatically interchangeable with Gedong Gincu.
