In a 2017 interview, horticulture official Saifur Rahman recalled finding one unusual tree in an orchard at Baliadighi near Sonamasjid in 2012. Material from that tree went to the Chapainawabganj horticulture centre and other centres for evaluation.
The report explains Gourmoti as a precious stone of Gour, the historic region around the village. Official English sources also spell the name Gauramati. The account documents a chance selection; it does not establish its parents.
