Mangoes in Mexico
Golden cheeks, a squeeze of lime, a little chilli.
Explore the mangoes
- Ataulfo — Mexico
Custardy and floral with a buttery texture and a bright sweet-sour balance.
Journeys through these mangoes
- A person. An island. A rosy name.
Follow Ataulfo into Chiapas, Itamaracá to Pernambuco and Manga Rosa into Brazilian selection orchards.
The country guide
Ataulfo is a lovely first taste of Mexico: a small fruit with sweet, creamy flesh. Its story is closely tied to Chiapas; the protected name Mango Ataulfo del Soconusco Chiapas refers to fruit from a specific growing area. Mexico’s mango culture is broader than this one selection, so treat it as your first stop, not the whole map.
Season and availability
Mexico’s agriculture ministry identifies April to August as the months with the greatest mango production. Timing varies by growing area and variety; ask where the fruit was grown and when it was harvested, especially when buying imported fruit.
At the table
Fresh mango with chilli, lime and chamoy is documented by Mexico’s agriculture ministry, alongside drinks, preserves, sauces and ice cream. Try a plain slice first, then add the sharp, spicy toppings to taste.
