# Butter, in one word

Egypt’s mango vocabulary makes room for a name you can almost feel.

Zebda — Egypt

A name on the map

Zebda means butter. Egyptian food-history publisher RAWI uses that translation in its account of the country’s mangoes: a small, vivid clue to why a local name can feel more personal than a catalogue number.

The historical record consulted here does not identify Zebda’s first tree or namesake. Its place in Egyptian orchards is well established, and research also records its use as a rootstock. The same fruit can belong to the juice stall, the family table and the nursery that grows the next orchard.

## The names it answers to

**Zebda**

Arabic name translated as butter.

**Zebdiah**

A romanization used in mango catalogues; local names and spellings vary.
