# A Florida backyard becomes a family favourite

A seedling planted in Miami in 1937 spread from garden to garden.

Valencia Pride — Miami, Florida, United States

Documented history

Valencia Pride began as a Haden seedling planted in Miami in 1937. It fruited in 1941, and growers soon began propagating it. Over the following decades it became a familiar backyard tree.

The name can sound Spanish, but the documented selection story is Floridian. The sources consulted do not explain the naming occasion. What they do preserve is the patient interval between planting a seed and discovering what it would become—four years before the first fruit, then many more years of other families growing it.
