# E-4 found a sweeter name

A numbered Florida seedling was named after the pineapple it brought to mind.

Sugarloaf — Boynton Beach, Florida, United States

Documented history

Sugarloaf began as E-4 in Gary Zill’s breeding programme, a seedling of Edward. For years, collectors knew the orchard number. Tropical Acres records that in 2018 Zill gave it the name Sugarloaf, referring to Sugar Loaf pineapple.

The name is a tasting association, not an ingredient or a cross between mango and pineapple. Its possible pollen parents remain uncertain. E-4 and Sugarloaf preserve two stages of one fruit’s history: the breeder’s trial tree and the memorable name that helped it travel.
