# An old name on a travelling fruit

Rajapuri appears in both western Indian cultivation and an early record of mangoes sent abroad.

Rajapuri — Western India; historical introduction from Bengaluru

A name on the map

Popenoe’s 1920 manual recorded a mango called Rajpuri, with Rajapuri among its spellings, introduced to the United States from Bangalore in 1901. NHB also records Rajapuri in Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Even the early writer was unsure which place the name referred to. We therefore keep the historical trail without choosing a town or royal founder that the evidence cannot establish.

## The names it answers to

**Rajapuri / Rajpuri**

Spellings connected in the historical manual; modern local selections still require careful identification.
