# The orchard discovery that received a royal name

At Tiew Thong orchard, a new mango became Mahachanok.

Maha Chanok — Tiew Thong orchard, Li district, Lamphun, Thailand

Documented history

Thai agricultural records place the original seedling at Tiew Thong orchard in Lamphun. Its parents are recorded as Nang Klang Wan and Sunset. A Royal Forest Department account credits Dech Thiewthong with discovering the new mango and records King Bhumibol Adulyadej bestowing the name Mahachanok.

That local record is more specific than the broad “Chiang Mai” origin often repeated abroad. International sellers also call it Rainbow mango for its coloured skin. We preserve the royal naming account while leaving aside conflicting dates in retellings; the orchard and the name are the reliable centre of the story.

## The names it answers to

**มหาชนก / Mahachanok / Maha Chanok**

Thai name and common romanizations.

**Rainbow mango**

English market nickname; it does not identify every multicoloured mango.
