# The grower hidden inside the name

Banaras remembers an unnamed orchard keeper whenever someone asks for Langra.

Langra — Varanasi (Banaras), Uttar Pradesh

Local tradition

The widely repeated naming story connects Langra to a mango tree in the orchard of a man with a walking disability in Varanasi. The Ministry of Food Processing Industries records the account with “it is said”: a useful distinction between the town’s tradition and a proven biography.

Langra is an old term referring to a limp. Repeating the story respectfully brings the person back into view, even though the sources do not preserve his name. Banarasi Langra makes the place explicit: this green-skinned favourite carries Banaras with it.
