# One name, more than one local mango

Haitian names keep local distinctions that a distant catalogue can miss.

Corne — Haiti; also maintained in South Florida collections

A name on the map

Corne is a Haitian mango name, but the record contains a useful warning against flattening local knowledge. Tropical Acres Farms reports that the fruit it grows as Corne is called Jean Marie in parts of Haiti, while northern Haiti has a differently shaped mango also called Corne.

The grower’s observation gives this entry its story: names can travel farther than the knowledge needed to identify them. We retain both names with that qualification. Neither a single first tree nor one universal identity for every Haitian Corne is established by the sources here.

## The names it answers to

**Corne**

A Haitian local name that can refer to different fruit in different areas.

**Jean Marie**

Reported for the South Florida collection’s Corne in parts of Haiti; not a universal synonym.
