# Before it had a name, it was 1-9

A numbered tree in Gary Zill’s breeding orchard became Ambrosia.

Ambrosia — Boynton Beach, Florida, United States

Documented history

Ambrosia came from Gary Zill’s breeding programme in Boynton Beach. Its original planting number was 1-9, and the recorded seed parent was Keitt. East Indian has been suggested as the pollen parent, but that part remains uncertain.

The number is a useful little piece of history: before a mango becomes a named favourite, it may spend years as one tree among many under observation. The available grower account does not explain the choice of “Ambrosia,” so the documented orchard identity is the story we preserve.
