## The mango named for a priest

Local tradition: an attributed account, with uncertainty preserved.

Pathiri (பாதிரி) means a Christian priest or clergyman in Tamil: the church sense of “Father”. The Tamil Lexicon traces the word to Portuguese padre. Local reporting connects this mango’s name to Rev. Ochs, a German missionary who arrived in Mayiladuthurai in 1845 and grew it in the garden of the TELC Holy Immanuel Church.

A church-souvenir account, quoted in reporting, gives the gift a second person to remember: Gnanachiriyam, a Christian convert associated with the Saraswathi Mahal Library in Thanjavur. He is said to have presented Ochs with a grafted mango sapling. In this telling, the fruit’s journey begins with someone sharing a plant, and someone else tending it.

There is another local telling: Ochs found a mango stone floating in the Cauvery, planted it, and later shared the ripe fruit with churchgoers. That river-seed story is a legend, distinct from the souvenir’s grafted-sapling account; the available reporting does not settle the two into one proven origin.

By 2025, the original tree was reported to have died, while descendant trees still bore fruit in the church garden. People recognise the mango through its perfume, sweetness and familiar name. The gift has outlived the giver.
