## How to enjoy it

Pickering combines firm flesh with a flavour some eaters describe as coconut-like. Try it plain first; the contrast between texture and aroma is the interesting part.

Cut the cheeks away from the flat stone, then slice or cube. Use the ripeness notes below to choose the right stage.

## When it is ripe

Wait for the yellowing fruit to soften and smell distinctly tropical.

Flavour notes are subjective. Ripeness, handling and growing conditions change the fruit.

## A mango named for a loyal customer

Documented history: consult the claims and qualifications in the cited sources.

Walter Zill selected Pickering from a chance seedling in Boynton Beach during the 1980s. He named it for Wayne Pickering, a longtime customer. The name carries a nursery relationship into every garden where the tree is planted.

Its compact habit later earned it the informal description “condo mango,” bringing it into small spaces and containers. Carrie and Irwin have been suggested as its parents, but that remains speculation. The remembered customer is a firmer part of the story than the proposed family tree.
