## How to enjoy it

Also known as Bowen, Kensington Pride is a familiar Australian summer mango. It brings both sweetness and tang, with soft flesh that works as well over a bowl as in a fruit salad.

Open over a bowl to catch the juice. Scoop the ripe flesh; strain blended pulp if you prefer less fibre.

## When it is ripe

A rich yellow ground color and fruity perfume matter more than the blush.

Flavour notes are subjective. Ripeness, handling and growing conditions change the fruit.

## The mango that came through the harbour

Local tradition: an attributed account, with uncertainty preserved.

The Queensland account describes Kensington as reputedly descended from seed given to George Sandrock, the harbourmaster at Port Denison, now Bowen, in the 1880s. Trade with Asia brought fruit as well as cargo; the exact voyage and parent tree remain uncertain.

The local story follows good fruit passed between growers, eventually reaching Harry Lott’s Kensington property. That property supplied the name, while Bowen kept its own affectionate names for the mango. “Bowen Special” and “KP” are tiny reminders of the people who saved seeds, compared fruit and shared what they liked.
