## How to enjoy it

Jehangir hides pale flesh beneath green skin. Its interest lies in the aromatic, sweet-spicy character; let the fruit become fragrant and yielding before opening it.

Cut ripe cheeks and scoop with a spoon. Taste the flesh plain before adding it to a dessert.

## When it is ripe

Ignore the green skin; use fragrance and a yielding shoulder as your guide.

Flavour notes are subjective. Ripeness, handling and growing conditions change the fruit.

## A grand name with a quieter paper trail

Documented name: the history of the first tree remains unresolved.

Jehangir, also written Jahangir, is a recognised mango in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University’s variety list. APEDA also records it as a parent of Swarna Jehangir, developed at the Fruit Research Station at Kodur. Its legacy therefore lives in another mango’s family tree.

The name naturally invites stories about the Mughal emperor. The sources checked here do not identify its first tree, breeder or naming occasion, so that royal connection remains unverified. The documented story is of a valued variety kept in cultivation and used to create something new.
