## How to enjoy it

Irwin’s crimson skin is immediately recognisable, but redness alone does not tell you whether it is ready. Its mild, low-fibre flesh is best assessed after a gentle squeeze.

Cut the cheeks away from the flat stone, then slice or cube. Use the ripeness notes below to choose the right stage.

## When it is ripe

Choose deep red fruit that gives lightly; color alone is not enough.

Flavour notes are subjective. Ripeness, handling and growing conditions change the fruit.

## A Miami surname with a life in Japan

Documented history: consult the claims and qualifications in the cited sources.

Irwin was selected by F. D. Irwin in Miami during the 1940s, with Lippens and Haden in its parentage. It later travelled to growers in Taiwan, Japan and other countries, becoming much more than a Florida backyard selection.

In Japan, carefully grown Irwin fruit can be sold under regional and premium names associated with Miyazaki. Those names describe origin or a market standard; they do not mean the cultivar itself was first bred there. The surname on the family tree and the identity on the gift box tell different chapters of the same journey.
